Community Arts Coordinator   (2 positions)


Reporting to: Programs Director 
Work Location: 50 Queen Street, Dartmouth, NS, and various community locations
Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am - 4pm with occasional weekend hours
Start Date: Monday, June 29, 2026 

End Date: Friday, August 27, 2026
Length of Contract: 10 weeks 
Hours Per Week: 35 
Hourly Pay: $20.00

About the MacPhee Centre
MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning is a non-profit organization that supports youth between the ages of 12 to 19 to access their own individual creativity and a path to success by connecting passion with purpose through the arts.  Located in Downtown Dartmouth, this community hub inspires creativity and confidence by offering free and unique programs in visual arts, music, videography, creative writing, and technology in a safe and inspiring space.

By bridging the learning gap for those who are disengaged from traditional education, or with barriers to accessing creative learning, the MacPhee Centre is a space where youth develop confidence, lifelong learning skills, and appreciation for the value in giving back to the community, and increased potential for employment.


Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Program Managers, the Community Arts Coordinators will assist and lead in providing programs to youth ages 12 to 19 and perform tasks including:

  • program development
  • facilitation
  • administration
  • community engagement and communication
  • public speaking
  • and program delivery with the help of art facilitators.

The successful applicants will have the opportunity to take the lead on various projects such as:

  • developing and executing programs in community settings
  • relationship management
  • database management
  • community outreach

The successful applicants will be supported by the Program Managers, evaluated, and provided feedback on performance regularly informally and formally at the end of the summer. They will set goals and receive guidance, professional development opportunities, and mentorship.


Duties and Responsibilities:
Program Development & Delivery

  • With guidance from Program Managers, build program offering for in-house and outreach programs to be held in community spaces
  • Work with Program Facilitators to determine scheduling and supply needs
  • Act as front-line staff for In-House and Outreach summer programs from July and August
  • Create and collect program evaluations from youth participants, parents, and community partners
  • Deliver pop-up programming as an outreach and recruitment strategy
  • Listen and provide support to youth participants.

Community Engagement and Recruitment

  • Develop and maintain registration processes for summer programming
  • Communicate with program participants, schools, community organizations, and parents/guardians
  • Assist with MacPhee Centre community events
  • Promote programs within community

Communications

  • Maintain database and information of youth from registrations
  • Represent the organization at community events and meetings
  • Document programs for social media content and newsletter communications

General

  • Maintain facilities where programs occur to ensure tidiness and readiness
  • Summer programming planning and execution
  • Organize program materials and track program inventory
  • Provide other general office support as required

Qualifications

  • This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs. Applicants must;
    • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
    • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment
    • Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
  • Knowledge of and experience in some or all of the following;
    • facilitation
    • youth care
    • art education
    • art practice
    • recreation
  • Friendly person who prides themselves on their attention to detail, and can easily multi-task
  • Must be comfortable reporting to more than one collaborator and mentor, can work independently and collaboratively
  • Experience with and advocating for 2SLGBTQ+, Newcomer, Indigenous, and Black communities
  • Experience in youth development and community engagement functions
  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate program times
  • Basic computer skills, including MS Office 365 (MS Word, MS SharePoint, MS Teams)
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle considered an asset

Knowledge and Experience Needs 

While we will consider all expressions of interest, we are particularly seeking individuals with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Accounting, finance, or audit expertise, particularly within the non-profit sector, with capacity to serve as Board Treasurer
  • Legal experience and knowledge of corporate law and employment, particularly regarding non-profit organizations,
  • Human Resources experience in areas of strategy and policy development and compliance

Position Purpose

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of the MacPhee Centre has four purposes for operating, which are as follows: 

  • Purpose – determining what community need(s) the organization wishes to address and how they will fulfill it.
  • Progress – setting the rate at which the organization takes on activities, programs and services to fulfill its purpose. 
  • Continuity – making sure that there are enough financial and human resources in place to guarantee the existence of the organization.  
  • Identity – clarifying to the community the organization’s values, beliefs, and services.

Term

Directors are elected by the membership. Directors serve for a two-year term and will be eligible to serve up to three terms (a total of six years) maximum. Directors may be released at the end of the elected term, by resigning, or according to the MacPhee Centre’s by-laws.  

Specific Treasurer Duties 

The Treasurer supports the Board in fulfilling its financial oversight responsibilities and helps ensure the financial health and accountability of the organization.  They work closely with the Executive Director and staff responsible for financial administration but does not manage the organization's day-to-day financial operations.

The Treasurer must:

  • Provide financial oversight to ensure the organization’s financial resources are managed responsibly and in alignment with Board policies and applicable regulations.
  • Work with the Executive Director and staff to review and present the annual budget to the Board for approval.
  • Review and present regular financial reports to the Board, helping Directors understand the organization’s financial position.
  • Monitor financial performance in relation to the approved budget and bring significant variances or risks to the attention of the Board.
  • Support the development and monitoring of financial policies and internal controls.
  • Work with staff and external professionals to ensure appropriate preparation of financial statements and the completion of any required audits or financial reviews.
  • Ensure the Board fulfills its fiduciary responsibilities and that appropriate financial information is available to support informed decision-making.
  • Chair the Finance Committee.

Commitment

Board members serve two-year terms, and up to three terms (total six years). The time commitment averages 10 to 15 hours per month. Board meetings occur every 6 weeks with committee meetings in between. 

Requirements of Board membership include:  

  • Commitment to the work of the organization.  
  • Knowledge and skills in one or more areas of Board governance: policy, finance, programs, personnel, and advocacy.  
  • Willingness to serve on committees.  
  • Attendance at Board meetings.  
  • Attendance at meetings of assigned committees.  
  • Attendance at Annual General Meetings  
  • Support in building and maintaining stakeholder relationships 
  • Support of special events.  
  • Support of, and participation in, fundraising events.  
  • Helping achieve financial support.

Facilitator Form

Please note that we receive facilitator applications at any time, but review and set up interviews 2-3 times a year.  When you submit your facilitator application we will confirm we have received it, and let you know when our next review timeframe is, and keep your application on file to touch base at that point in time.

Facilitators at MacPhee earn $50/hour for usually 1-2 hour sessions. (These can be both reoccurring sessions and one-off lessons).
Relevant experience can look like experience with facilitating and teaching, experience with a creative or art practice, and experience with youth. These experiences can be separate or they can overlap.
