Join The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning Volunteer Board of Directors

Application Deadline: Sunday, June 22, 2025, at 11:59 PM

About the Experience

Are you looking to use your skills and creative gifts to make a real difference in the lives of youth and their communities?  This is an opportunity to make impact in a tangible way.  By joining the Board of the MacPhee Centre, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the success of young people, expand your personal and professional networks, and further develop your leadership and management skills.

The MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning is a registered charity that empowers youth between the ages of 12-19 by connecting passion with purpose through the arts. Located in downtown Dartmouth, this community hub inspires creativity and confidence by offering unique programs in visual and performing arts, creative writing and technology in a safe and inspiring space. By bridging the learning gap in those who are disengaged from traditional education, or with barriers to accessing creative learning, the MacPhee Centre helps in the development of confidence, lifelong learning skills, an appreciation for the value in giving back to the community and increased potential for employment in our communities. We help NS youth find their voice through the arts.

While we will consider all expressions of interest, we are particularly seeking individuals with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Legal experience and knowledge of corporate law and employment, particularly regarding non-profit organizations,
  • Human Resources experience in areas of strategy and policy development, compliance and performance management,
  • Communications, Marketing and Public Relations expertise,
  • Indigenous communities, cultural awareness, and guidance,

Position Purpose

The Board of Directors is the legal authority for the MacPhee Centre for Creative Learning. As a member of the Board, a Director acts in a position of trust for the community and is responsible for the effective governance of the organization. The Board of the MacPhee Centre has four purposes for operating, which are as follows:

  • Purpose – determining what community need(s) the organization wishes to address and how they will fulfill it.
  • Progress – setting the rate at which the organization takes on activities, programs and services to fulfill its purpose.
  • Continuity – making sure that there are enough financial and human resources in place to guarantee the existence of the organization.
  • Identity – clarifying to the community the organization’s values, beliefs, and services.

The MacPhee Centre board is an Administrative Governing Board.  This means, that in addition to providing the standard policy-making governance of most boards, it may implement some of the policies and plans itself. The board may assign an Executive Committee to implement policies and manage the organization. The Executive Committee may carry out some of the roles, responsibilities and functions of an executive director. The Executive Committee is accountable to the board as a whole.

Term

Directors are elected by the membership. Directors serve for a two-year term and will be eligible to serve up to three terms maximum. Directors may be released at the end of the elected term, by resigning, or according to the MacPhee Centre’s by-laws.
