A Term Bursting with Creativity and Community
From epic battles in Dungeons & Dragons to hands-on boat crafting aboard the CSS Acadia, the winter term was filled with adventure, creativity, and connection. Our programs brought together youth to explore self-expression, storytelling, and skill-building in fun and meaningful ways.
Read on for a short summary of some programs offered this term!
Dungeons & Dragons
“I leave rugby early so I can make it on time to D&D here!” one youth shared. There’s nothing like playing in person, rolling dice, and working together to take down a villain. As the final battle unfolded, everyone felt like they had landed the final blow, leaving the session energized and chatty and already asking, “You HAVE to do this again!”
Boat Craft on the CSS Acadia
Aboard the CSS Acadia, youth participated in hands-on boatcraft workshops. They made stools for the workshop space and Diddy bags to take home. Programs with the Maritime Museum Boat School are always a unique opportunity to connect with local maritime history while learning practical skills.
Breakdancing & Beatmaking with Unity Charity
With Unity Charity, we stepped into the world of hip-hop, learning moves like the Shoe Check and Upper Body Popping, and we explored the history of breakdancing.
Meanwhile, in the Beatmaking program, youth explored the art of music production—separating and programming drum samples, layering sounds, and using Soundtrap as a foundation for musical arrangements.
We are thrilled that both Breakdancing and Beatmaking will continue next term, both in person and virtual!
Fashion & Identity with NSCAD
Through hands-on learning with sewing machines, screen printing, hemming, and pocket-making, youth explored fashion as a form of self-expression. The workshop empowered them to create their designs and reflect on how clothing represents identity.
BIPOC Dinner Club:
Each session of the BIPOC Dinner Club was a feast—both for the stomach and the soul. Youth gathered to cook, eat, and share stories, from grilled cheese and tomato soup to jerk chicken and coconut tarts. One night, a mini karaoke machine made an appearance, leading to a joyful singalong. When a song choice unexpectedly brought up emotions, it opened up a conversation about the power of music and being mindful of how it affects others.
“The MacPhee Centre has the best food,” one youth declared after a meal of muffins and lentil soup—proof that a warm meal can be just as nourishing as the creative experiences we share.
GSA Queer Arts:
In our GSA Queer Arts program, youth explored self-expression through a large variety of mediums—painting, singing, sculpture and more! A standout was the zine and poster project. With words and imagery, youth crafted pieces that reflected their personalities and interests, embracing art as a tool for communication and identity.
It’s been an incredible term of learning, laughter, and creativity. From storytelling to dance, music, and design, we’re grateful for the energy and passion our youth bring to the MacPhee Centre. We can’t wait to see what they create next!
