Capturing Creativity in the Photography Program
This March Break, youth at the MacPhee Centre explored photography. From learning the basics of digital cameras to experimenting with lighting, tackling street photography challenges, and capturing emotions through photography, each day brought new opportunities for growth, fun, and artistic expression.
“My favorite part of the program was making new friends and trying something new. When I first came, I didn’t know what I was doing, but I learned how to work a camera.”
These photos really speak for themselves! (but if you want the details, see below the photos).

Starting with an introduction to digital cameras, youth spent the first day taking images around the MacPhee Centre before moving on to portrait photography. The day focused on learning, experimenting, and getting comfortable behind the lens.
Then, youth explored creative portrait photography using LED lighting and colour gels. This hands-on session covered more basic camera functions while encouraging participants to play with different effects. The youth had lots of fun with this set up, taking lots of pictures of one another and learning how to direct some posing!
Venturing beyond the Centre, the group took to the streets of downtown for a photography challenge—taking pictures of circles. One participant summed it up best: “It’s cool to have a photography challenge.” This activity encouraged a new way of seeing the world, sharpening observation skills, and capturing unique city scenes.
The final part of the workshop focused on reviewing their work, reflecting on what they had learned, and experimenting with product photography. Using everyday objects around the Centre, youth staged and captured compelling product shots. Some also explored an extra challenge: capturing images that convey emotion.
The energy, enthusiasm, and creativity of the youth made each moment this week a success, and their images truly reflect the excitement and growth they experienced.
Stay tuned for more creative adventures at the MacPhee Centre!
