Finding Their Voice – Youth Shine in Intro to Content Creation Program

This fall, our Intro to Content Creation program returned for its second year in partnership with Afterwords Literary Festival, and over eight short weeks, youth participants grew into confident, creative storytellers.

What began with uncertainty quickly blossomed into courage and professionalism. Youth learned the fundamentals of interviewing, plus the basics of capturing photos and video for social media. They practiced approaching strangers with thoughtful questions, building confidence each time they stepped outside their comfort zone. Staff, festival organizers, and even authors were blown away by their bravery, focus, and natural presence.

Throughout the festival, the group attended a range of events at the Halifax Central Library, the Black Cultural Centre, and the Bus Stop Theatre - putting their new skills into action in real-time. Whether they were capturing close-up shots of food at receptions or crafting stylish, artistic clips for social media, their eye for detail and creative flair shone through in every assignment.

One of the program’s highlights was interviewing authors before their events, offering youth a unique behind-the-scenes experience with writers of all backgrounds. They were introduced to a wide range of literature - including poetry, short stories, children’s books, graphic novels - and many shared how meaningful it was to see themselves reflected in the authors on stage.

But the standout moment for nearly everyone? Kid’s Day, where the energy, creativity, and connection made the experience unforgettable.

By the end of the program, these budding content creators weren’t just practicing skills — they were stepping into their roles as emerging professionals and entrepreneurs. We are incredibly proud of the confidence, artistry, and heart they brought to every moment.
