Exploring Landscapes with Collage

In January, we welcomed a vibrant group of 20 youths from John Martin Junior High to the MacPhee Centre for a hands-on art workshop.

The session focused on landscapes, with students learning how to build depth using foreground, middle ground, and background elements. Through collage, students explored how layering shapes, colours, and textures could bring their landscapes to life.

One table worked on a flat collage, with the challenge not to use scissors and only tear the materials. The other table took on a 3D version, allowing students to experiment with dimension and space in a tactile way. These two projects encouraged creative problem-solving and kept the youth engaged in a fresh and exciting way.

It was incredible to see how each student approached the challenge differently, expressing their unique perspectives. By the end of the session, the room was filled with different types of landscapes.

We love providing interactive learning experiences that make art accessible, fun, and inspiring. A big thank you to the youth and educators from John Martin JR High for joining us—we can’t wait to create with more school groups in our Dartmouth location soon!
